Buying clothes for a baby or toddler is easy until you have to pick a size. Brands label sizes by age, but babies grow at very different speeds, so the age on the label is only a starting point. This guide explains what each size usually means and how to choose well, whether you are shopping for your own child or buying a gift.
Baby and kids sizes by age

These ranges follow common European sizing and can vary slightly between brands. Height is a better guide than age: if your baby is tall for their age, go by height.
How to choose the right size
Measure height, not age. Lay your baby flat and measure from the top of the head to the heel. Compare it with the table above.
Between two sizes? Choose the bigger one. Babies grow quickly, and a slightly roomy jumpsuit or pajama set will fit comfortably for longer.
Check the fit points. For jumpsuits and bodysuits, the length from shoulder to crotch matters most; if snaps pull or the fabric stretches tight when your baby moves, it is time for the next size.
Think about the season. For the hot Gulf summer, breathable cotton with a relaxed fit is most comfortable. For cooler winter evenings, leave a little room for a layer underneath.
Buying a gift?
If you do not know the baby’s exact size, choose one size ahead of their current age: for a newborn, 3-6 months is a safe choice that they will grow into. Newborn gift sets are another easy option because they are designed for the first weeks.
